'선착순'을 영어로? 'on a first come, first served basis'

굉장히 쓸모 있는 표현인데 영어로 말하기가 아주 어려운 것들이 있습니다. 그중에 하나가 '선착순'입니다. 우리말로는 한자어를 사용하여 '먼저 도착한 순서'라는 의미일 텐데 영어로는 어떻게 표현할까요? 함께 알아보겠습니다.

 

1. 다음 Tom과 Anna의 대화를 보고 의미를 유추해 보세요!

Tom: Did you hear about the free yoga class this weekend?   Anna: Yes! I really want to join. How do we sign up?   Tom:  It’s on a first come, first served basis. 우리말은 간단히 세 음절로 표현할 수 있지만 영어는 '선착순'이라는 말을 그대로 풀이해서 표현하고 있습니다. 말 그대로 '먼저 온 사람이 먼저 대접받는 방식'으로 풀어 쓰고 있습니다. 

 

Tom: Did you hear about the free yoga class this weekend?  

톰: 이번 주말에 무료 요가 수업 있는 거 들었어?  

Anna: Yes! I really want to join. How do we sign up?  

안나:  응! 나도 정말 가고 싶어. 어떻게 신청하는 거야?  

Tom:  It’s on a first come, first served basis. They’re only taking 20 people.  

톰:  선착순으로 진행된대. 20명만 받을 거래.  

Anna:  Oh, really? What time does it start?  

안나:  진짜? 몇 시에 시작해?  

Tom: The class starts at 10 a.m., but they said we should arrive early to get a spot.  

톰:  수업은 오전 10시에 시작하지만, 자리를 잡으려면 일찍 가야 한대.

안나:  안전하게 9시까지는 갈 거야!
